packing & moving
things to keep in mind...
- Before you move, take the time to declutter. If you haven't used an item in over a year and it’s not a cherished family heirloom, it’s likely time to let it go. Consider donating it to charity, selling it at a garage sale, or simply discarding it. There's no point in paying to move things you don’t need or won’t use in your new space.
- If you have any questions or need assistance, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. Make sure to keep a copy of all important documents, like the estimate and confirmation, with you throughout your move in case you need to reference them.
- Pack your boxes so that they’re easy to lift and manage. Avoid overloading them—if you can’t lift the box comfortably, it’s too heavy. Aim to keep the weight of each box under 50 pounds for easier handling.
- Use the right type of cartons for packing to ensure your items arrive safely. Plastic trash bags should never be used for packing, as they do not provide adequate protection for your belongings.
- Make sure to use proper padding when packing your boxes. Don't skimp on packing paper or bubble wrap. As a general rule, it's always better to use extra cushioning rather than too little.
- Pack dishes vertically in dish barrels, never stack them flat in a box. Generally, a dish pack should hold no more than the equivalent of four place settings. If you try to fit more, you likely haven’t used enough padding (see Item 5 above).
- Avoid packing fragile items in boxes with heavy or bulky items to prevent damage.
- Label each box clearly with the room where you'd like it placed in your new home. This will help streamline the unloading process. Additionally, consider creating an inventory of items in each box to make unpacking and locating essential items easier.
- Keep your valuables and essential medications with you during the move, as the mover is not responsible for these items.
- As you pack, clearly label each box with its contents and the designated room in your new home where it should be placed. Create a “first essentials” box for each room to make your transition smoother. For the bedroom, include items like bed linens, toiletries, toilet paper, and first aid supplies. For the kitchen, consider packing the coffee maker, coffee essentials, beverages, and the dishes and utensils needed for your first meal.
- Designate a specific area, such as an empty closet or spare bathroom, to store items that should not be packed or taken by the movers, including valuables, purses, plants, and pets. Make sure to inform the movers that this space is off-limits, as it contains items you plan to handle yourself. It’s important to communicate clearly with both the packers and movers about which items should be packed and moved, and which should not. Effective communication ensures a smooth and organized move.
- If possible, arrange for young children and pets to be elsewhere on moving day. This allows you and the movers to focus entirely on the task at hand. Moving day can be hectic and even hazardous for little ones and animals, so it’s safest for them to be in a different location during the move.
- Keep your phone service active at your current location until the move is fully complete. This ensures you can stay in touch with your movers and anyone else involved, which is essential for a smooth and organized move.
- Make arrangements to disconnect services like gas, electricity, cable, telephone, and newspaper deliveries at your current location and set them up at your new place. If possible, have the services overlap for a day or two in case your move date changes. Also, inform your post office of your new address and the date to begin forwarding your mail.
